What does one mean when one says, "I didn't like his tone." or "Don't you dare speak to me in that tone!" or "That song has a happy tone." etc?

Tone, in literature, conveys attitude. It is a literary device used by the writer to express an attitude befitting a scene, character or instance, in a piece of writing. Both prose and poetry have tone. To set the tone a writer uses many other literary devices some of which we have discussed previously. Rhyme, rhythm, meter, type of language etc help form the tone of a literary work.
